Rhesus Monkeys live in multi-male, multi-female troops. There is a matrilineal hierarchy in their societies although males are dominant to females. Males are peripheral to the group and are replaced every few years. Rhesus Monkeys form groups that may include as many species as 200. All groupings depend on environmental characteristics. Rhesus Monkeys are diurnal.
Rhesus Monkeys are highly active and very loud. They enjoy being in water and are good swimmers. They live in groups but when it becomes too large a subgroup of females may split off to form a new group. Populations generally consist of a few unrelated males and many closely related females.

The breeding seasons vary from one population to another. Those that live in cold areas usually mate in the fall, while those that live in hot climates have less defined mating seasons. Gestation period lasts 135-194 days afterwards a female gives birth to one infant, which weighs about 450g at birth.
Rhesus Monkeys - Mating
Mating usually occurs in September and October. Males become sexually mature about 4 and a half years and females - at the age of 3 and a half years. Gestation averages about 164 days of 5.5 months. A baby is born in 7 months after mating.
Rhesus Monkeys - Parental Care
Females are good mothers; they nurse their young for 7-14 months. Like human babies, Rhesus Monkey babies strive to spend all their time with their mothers; they seek physical contact with them. This is important for normal emotional development of infant monkeys. As far as the males are concerned, they leave their group and migrate to a new one at a young age for mating purposes. Rhesus Monkeys - Interesting Facts
Rhesus Monkeys are the closest relatives to humans. Baby Rhesus Monkeys are always born at night. In many parts of India these animals are considered to be sacred.
